Preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement for the proposed ORNUA Butter Facility – County Cork
Summary:
MOR Environmental was commissioned by Kerrygold Butter Packing Ireland Limited, a subsidiary of ORNUA (Formerly the Irish Dairy Board Co-operative Ltd (IDB), to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) in respect of a proposed new butter processing and packing facility in Mitchelstown, County Cork.
Scope:
A particular challenge that had to be addressed as part of the EIS, was that the entire development site was located within the former Mitchelstown Castle Demesne, presenting both cultural heritage and visual constraints.
The facility was also strategically located within an existing Dairygold processing facility in order to make use of the raw cream produced at that facility. Whilst the proposed standalone development did not require regulation by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), it was located on lands that fell within the existing Industrial Emissions Licensed boundary for the Dairygold facility and was therefore subject to regulation by the EPA under the existing Dairygold Licence (P0404-02). As a result all emissions arising from the proposed butter facility such as noise, air, odour and water had to meet the requirements of both Dairygold and the EPA.
Outputs:
Planning permission was successfully obtained for the facility from Cork County Council in 2014.
