Investigation and Remediation of an Unauthorised Fill Site, Grannagh, Co. Kilkenny
Summary:
This site was one of the waste sites listed by the European Commission against the Irish Government. The site, which adjoins a SAC (Special Area of Conservation), was filled in an unauthorised manner with inert C&D wastes.
Scope:
MOR Environmental worked on this project for over 7 years, undertaking extensive environmental site assessments to determine the physical extent and environmental quality of waste materials present on the site. Risk assessments (Tier 1 and Tier 2) were undertaken to assess environmental and human health risks associated with the presence of the wastes. The results established to the satisfaction of all stakeholders that the fill materials did not pose any significant risks. As part of this work we conducted extensive baseline ecological assessments and proposed habitat enhancement measures as part of the site remediation works. This work was conducted in consultation with various statutory bodies including the NPWS and Kilkenny County Council.
Outputs:
An Bord Pleanála granted planning permission for the retention of the fill materials at the site and to implement innovative ecological rehabilitation measures that had been proposed by MOR. A waste permit was also obtained from Kilkenny County Council to allow the remediation works to proceed. All works were completed to the satisfaction of all parties.
